In the summer of 2012 there will be a unique encounter: The well-known Circus Roncalli will be setting up its tent on the Old Garden (Alter Garten), the most splendid square in Schwerin. The magic of circus will meet the passionate world of opera - right here. The mastery of acrobats, jugglers and clowns is combined with the art of international vocal soloists in the opera masterpiece Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallos.

The focus of the plot is on Canio’s destiny, a clown who can’t get over the breach of faith of his young wife Nedda. Legendary is Canio’s aria “Ridi, Pagliaccio” in which he announces his understanding of the world of circus: “La gente paga, e rider vuole qua. E se Arlecchin t'invola Colombina, ridi, Pagliaccio, e ognun applaudirà!” (“The audience pays and wants to laugh. And if Arlecchino steals Colombina from you, laugh, Pagliaccio – and everyone will applaud!”) But there comes the time when Canio loses control over himself…
